7. Car Rental Insurance. Another "whole class on its own." The best thing to know is that your credit card or your own personal car insurance will likely cover you in case of an incident. Check with both before you go to decide if you need to purchase additional coverage.

8. Remember, the agents work on commission. Although they may seem they have your best interests in mind, do NOT blindly follow their recommendations for add on services. Do your homework and decide in advance before you arrive at the rental counter.

1. Do you really need a car? If you prefer a multi location

The luxurious pampering at their Willow Springs Spa left me more relaxed, truly at ease, than I've been in years. It's the attention to detail that sets such places apart from lesser places I'd simply call hotels.

While the Raven and Greyhawk, Troon North, Boulders and We-Ko-Pa are legendary, but some of the best kept secrets are... well, secrets. Places like Coyote Lakes, with that stone wall, Sanctuary's tough desert course, or Gold Canyon's Dinosaur Mountain (and the their rare 9-hole rate) will provide you with challenges and memories to make this the trip of a lifetime. I was glad to be able to take in a second play most days of the trip, and the vast variety of choices made all the difference. Budget is a factor, so knowing that there are some quality affordable places to enjoy that second play of the day helped Scottsdale earn a special place on my list of Return To destinations.

Much as I'd have liked to spend the entire trip playing golf, I'm glad I took the time to break away and enjoy some of the other things Scottsdale has to offer. No, I'm not talking about shopping for southwest style art, (though there's plenty of that to be had as well. Scottsdale is also home to the Heard Museum.) The spa was one example. The tour by Hummer, though hardly plush, was an extraordinary experience, and a great way to see the true desert. I wouldn't have missed either of them. The horseback trail rides, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and night vision excursions might appeal to some. I've put the hot air balloon ride on my list for next time. Nightlife is plentiful, as is the evening entertainment. Most of the time, I found I preferred to enjoy a relaxing evening and be up for a seven o'clock tee-off.

Flying in to Sky Harbor was easy enough, and the hotels all seem to have shuttles available. Quality car rentals are also readily available, and I found I preferred this, as it gave me a lot more flexibility, let me pick and choose the courses I wanted to play on any given day.

I chose to stay at resorts the entire time I was in Scottsdale. A friend I ran into opted to rent a course-side condo. I do enjoy my creature comforts, but had to hand it to him. There's something to be said for having your morning coffee on the patio while looking out at the course you'll soon be playing. I didn't mind driving for the second play of the day. Driving first thing in the morning would've taken something away from the vacation, though so, if budget allows, I highly recommend either a resort or a course-side condo rental.

All in all, my first golf vacation in the Phoenix area was a pleasure, but this second trip to Scottsdale was a dream, and one I could enjoy most any time of the year. I've given Scottsdale a permanent spot on my list of golf vacation destinations, and imagine you'll do so too.

A very popular recreational spot is the Barwon River and Buckley Falls which are perfect for a bushwalk and picnic. Drive a bit further south to Ocean Grove for a swim and amazing scenery. Geelong truly has something for everyone.

4. Mildura

Mildura is Victoria's most productive fruit-growing area, with the mighty Murray River a drawcard for its many tourists. There is so much to see here, with Orange World, Gol Gol Fisheries and the Golden River Zoo some of the attractions. There are plenty of camping spots to choose from especially at the Mungal National Park, famous for its red sand dunes. Board a paddle steamer for a day to see the Murray River at its best. The PS Melbourne and the Rothbury both offer daily trips. Fantastic for a the whole family, Mildura is wonderful tourist spot.

5. Snowy River National Park

Known for wild horses and magical sunrises, this is Victoria's High Country at its best, with some of Australia's best ski fields close by, and popular for all types of outdoor sports such as abseiling, horse riding, canoeing, bike riding and hiking. There is incredible scenery here, with incredible gorges and river systems and plenty of fantastic camping spots. The best way to get there is in a hire car, via Buchan (from Jindabyne) along the Barry Way which will lead you to some amazing cave systems. The Buchan Caves are definitely worth a visit.

6. Macedon Ranges

Close to an hour out of Melbourne, this is a great spot to visit to escape the heat and enjoy the local wines and fruits of the region. With the Great Dividing Range and central highlands as a backdrop, visit attractions such as the Hanging Rock, and the Macedon National Park which has plenty of beautiful camping sights to choose from. The Cope Williams Winery, Mount Macedone Winery and Cobaw Ridge offer excellent local wine tasting and stunning scenery in every direction. Mount Macedon also has incredible gardens open to the public.

7. Lakes Entrance

If you love water sports, you will love this region. Located close to Ninety Mile Beach, Lakes Entrance offers panoramic ocean views in every direction. It is a popular holiday spot situated where the Gippsland Lakes meet the ocean. Lake Tyers is fantastic for a picnic, and perfect for a drive through its forest park. The most popular activities are fishing and boating, with so many waterways to choose from, and it is a perfect destination to relax and enjoy the surrounding coastal beauty.

8. Wilsons Promontory National Park

Wilsons Promontory can be found at the Victoria's southern tip along the South Gippsland Highway. With incredible scenery, wildlife and rock formations, it is a stunning place to visit, and there are plenty of walking trails and beaches accessible mostly by foot. The 1952 Jaguar XK120 was a sports car manufactured between 1948 and 1954. It succeeded the SS 100 which ended its production after the start of World Wad II. It was launched at the 1948 London Motor Show as a test bed vehicle to highlight the new Jaguar XK engine. But the car became such a sensation that William Lyons was persuaded to put it into production as a standard model.

The first cars that were manufactured had hand built aluminum bodies on an ash frame. Its famous engine was the XK engine which had dual overhead cam 3.4 L straight-6 engine. The XK120 was available as a coupe, convertible, or an original roadster.

In January 1954, the XK120 coupe won the first 24 hour race held in Australia. In June 1954 a XK120 FHC won the first import win in NASCAR's first road race at Linden Airport New Jersey. Lavish Baroque altars adorn the tiny parish church of Saint-Michel, dating to 1561 and cobblestone lanes lead past sun-burnished timber houses and small farming plots.
 
The people of the Binntal signed a compact fifty years ago to perfect nature and resist development. The ski lifts and mass modern expansion that have overtaken so many other Alpine communities are appreciatively absent in villages like Binn, whose population of 70 make it the largest town in the valley and the only one with a hotel, the Ofenhorn, a Belle Epoch gem that once hosted a strapping Winston Churchill.

The Binntal is known locally as the "Valley of Hidden Treasures" for its extraordinary mineral content. On guided excursions, visitors can go in search of those hidden treasures-rare and colorful crystals. Ascending the valley on your crystal hunt you'll discover the hamlet of Imfeld (population 7). When this clustered village burned to the ground in the 15th century, it was rebuilt with the addition of a village chapel and has remained substantively unchanged ever since. In the unlikely event you return empty-handed in your search for crystals, you will still have found in the Binntal a 16th century masterpiece and a traditional way of life, both set in a showcase of exquisite natural beauty-a rare find for 21st century travelers. 

On the Chamois Trail

On the western and opposite end of Valais from the Binntal is the mega-resort of Verbier.  Its aspect on the sunny southern side of the Alps in an expansive glacial bowl laced with 35 lifts and access to 400km of marked runs makes it one of the largest and most popular ski resorts in the world. But when the snow melts in spring, Verbier becomes a jumping-off point, giving walkers and hikers ready access to spectacular mountain views and the Upper Val de Bagnes Nature Reserve, one of the finest protected wildlife areas in the Alps, and the second largest in Switzerland.

From the heart of Verbier, take the gondola to Les Ruinettes and follow a well-marked footpath to the Cabane du Mont Fort, a mountain inn which affords some inspiring views of Mont Blanc to the west. As you cross the small bowl to the south, a rocky trail known as the Sentier de Chamois (the Chamois Trail) leads toward Col Termin and Lac de Louvie and into the nature reserve. Keen eyesight and binoculars fixed on the slopes above will expose the rocky crags and overhangs that provide habitat for alpine species such as marmots, ibex, and chamois.

Both the ibex, with its overwhelming scimitar-shaped horns, and the chamois, a goat-antelope species with smaller hook-tipped horns, were nearly hunted to extinction in the early 20th century.  Today, in protective reserves like the Upper Val de Bagne, populations of both species have rebounded dramatically. Spotting family groups of ibex with a half dozen small kids bounding fearlessly from rock to rock is not uncommon. The chamois, which can ascend 3,000 vertical feet of mountain slope in just 15 minutes, is naturally more elusive, but can often be seen grazing on sheltered patches of grass below the trail. 

The return to Verbier is quick and easy, but the more aggressive hikers will want to continue on the belvedere trail to Lac de Louvie, another hidden jewel of Valais. As you approach the lake from the north, don't miss exploring the two large barns with their miraculously self-supporting vaulted stone roofs. Dating to the early 19th century, these ingenious structures have been beautifully restored and classified as historic monuments. 

Continuing on to the Cabane de Louvie for the night puts you on the serene lakeshore with the glaciated Grand Combin as a towering mountain backdrop. In Lac de Louvie's pristine setting it's easy to imagine yourself being a hundred miles from the nearest soul. But a surprisingly short-and steep-descent into the village of Fionnay offers an easy bus return to Verbier and a striking example of how easy it is to find hidden surprises in Valais' age-old alpine valleys.

When there´s a church in the arrivals hall and the airport food smells better than in most upper-end eateries at home, you know you´ve landed in Italy. Milan Bergamo Airport though small in size, is rich in Italian spirit and is the airport of choice for those wanting to swoosh down snow-capped Alps or just partake in some apres-ski.

For that you get free internet access, sockets to plug in your PC, SKY television and teletext, hot and cold refreshments, telecheck in before arrival and a dedicated check-in if you have luggage, so no more milling around with the hoi polloi.

In The Canadian Rockies a good place to view these interesting phenomena is the Columbia Ice Field stop on the highway from Banff to Jasper, Alberta. At the foot of the Glacier the Elevation is aprox. 11000 ft ASL. There are normally about 30 – 40 Raven walking around the parking lot. The more inventive ones will climb onto the hood or roof of a car and spread their wings, going CAWW, CAWW, and then leap off. When the hit the ground they fake an injury and of course everyone rushes over to give them sympathy and FOOD!

As soon as the tour bus leaves they regain their health and stand around in groups discussing how good a job Blackie did with the bus from Vancouver.

If you want the last laugh hang around until dusk. This is when they all slink off and start to walk back down the roadside to Jasper. It is a long 2 Kilometers before the elevation is suitable for them to take off. You can see where the trail mysteriously ends. That is because they fly out from there.

It’s quite a sight to see, all those big black birds, sometimes 2 or 300 of them, walking single file along the side of the highway. There is not a sound until they are about 200 meters from the take of point. Then they start to mutter and jostle for position. They continue single file right up to the point where the jump off the cliff and soar downwards and away with a loud CAWWWWW!

Experience is sometimes won the hard way, and we are no exception. We had thought through many things in planning our trip across America but inevitably we learned a few lessons along the way. So for any of you that aspire to make such a trip, here are a few pointers.

First of all when planning your trip use any resources you can obtain for nothing. We are members of AAA and their free Travel Guides and maps were invaluable. I am told that if you are a member of the AA in the UK you can also get the AAA's guides and maps for nothing, but don't hold me to that. State tourist offices in the UK will happily also mail you brochures and maps. In addition to the AAA Travel Guides, which contain a wealth of information on hotels, we also made a point of picking up a copy of the hotel discount coupon books in each state. The Florida Homes and Travel website has a link to websites where you can print off coupons or order the books. We also always stopped at State Welcome Centers to add to our collection of free maps, guides and hotel discount books.

However a cautionary tale. Don't get too obsessed by low hotel prices in either the AAA guide or the discount coupon books. Neither wish to upset their advertisers, so they give no hint that would alert you to hotels in questionable areas. We made this mistake in Montgomery, Alabama on the second night of our trip. The Day's Inn looked fine and the immediate area didn't look run down, but as soon as we were unloading our things to put them in our room we were accosted by a black man whose opening words were " Don't worry I'm not going to rob you". He was a beggar and $5 sent him on his way, but we kicked ourselves for letting our guard down and for missing the obvious signs. What signs? We soon worked out that the better restaurant chains are never on the wrong side of town. First find the likes of Outback, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc., and then look at the hotels in the vicinity. We discovered that the hotel chains own guides usually list adjacent restaurants, so as we gathered them on our travels it got easier to find the right side of town. It's like a secret code, but no one had told us.

From our earlier articles you will know that we were taking a big coolbox with us complete with our breakfast cereals, as we can't stand a cooked breakfast every day. It proved to be unnecessary and we wouldn't do it again. A free continental breakfast was provided by all but 4 of the 24 hotels that we stayed in. It seems to be a very common thing now. Mind you the breakfasts certainly varied, some being little more than a muffin or doughnut and a coffee, while others were lavish spreads. Including taxes we spent an average of $52 a night on a hotel, equating to about $45 a night before taxes. Apart from Monument Valley, which cost us $157 in the only hotel there, the highest we paid was $84 and the lowest was $33. In general we found that we got a much better room and a far better breakfast in a three star hotel such as Hampton Inn or Comfort Suites than in a two star property such as Ramada or Super 8, though we had good examples of both. Our worst experience was in a supposedly three star Ramada. We preferred to make an early start so that we arrived mid-afternoon and could explore a place in daylight and be relaxed enough to search out an acceptable hotel and not worry if it took us a while. We always insisted on seeing the hotel room before we committed.

While we wouldn't take our big coolbox again, our small one was invaluable. That and our electric kettle and mugs, etc., ensured that we could make ourselves a hot drink in our hotel room when it suited us. In the sparsely populated dessert areas our Thermos flask was also a lifesaver. We filled it with hot water before leaving each morning so we could stop and make ourselves a coffee or tea if we couldn't find anywhere to buy one, as surprisingly often proved to be the case, even on Interstate highways. It can be a long distance between places out west and some rest areas have no toilets let alone food or drink machines. By the way it is essential to carry plenty of water or other drinks in case you were to breakdown. Police patrols are almost non-existent in the dessert so we were grateful for our trusty Tracfone that never once lost a signal. How else could you call for help if you broke down? I guess you would have to raise your car's bonnet and hope someone stops.

We organised our clothes into three groups. With good weather an emergency set of cold weather gear stayed in the holdall in the car boot the whole trip. We had a smaller suitcase that we used for the clothes we planned to wear for the next three days. We found the weather forecasts remarkably accurate! The other case held all our other clothes. That way most nights we only needed to take one suitcase into the hotel. The dirty washing accumulated in a plastic bag in the car boot between a once a week wash. When that was due we ensured that we chose a hotel with a guest laundry. To keep the car boot reasonably tidy we also had a bin for spare shoes, and another for storing the collection of maps and travel guides that we accumulated.

We preferred to have a cold lunch, such as a sub or a salad and then have a cooked meal in the evening once our day's travels were completed. Dinner cost us an average of $35. Lunch costs are buried in the $24 a day we spent in cash. Petrol for the 7,827 miles cost us $371 an average of less than $8 a day, something of a contrast to UK prices! The show we went to in Las Vegas, entrance fees to various things and the odd souvenir added a further $14 a day to make an average daily cost for the whole trip of $133. Owning our own car meant we didn't have to hire one, so anyone renting would have to allow for this additional expense.

The major reason for the growth of the tourism industry in the recent times has been the growth or emergence of the favorable car rental companies. Whatever is the reason for their growth but discount car rental services have proved to be extremely beneficial for the customers. Tourists are getting the cars of their choice, make, and model at unbelievable prices. But to book a car in advance can be as troublesome as buying a new car altogether.
